Vegetable Tanned Leather
Our leather is the tannage or technique of tanning the cowhide into the leather. It’s called “vegetable” because of the natural materials used in the tanning method like tree bark. It is a natural process, it’s also eco-friendly. Vegetable tanning or veg tan as it’s typically known as is one of the oldest strategies of tanning known to man. This tanning technique has been used for centuries to create leathers for the finest saddles and case goods. These leathers naturally can manufacture a beautiful patina over the years of use.
Why Buffalo Leather?
Buffalo Leather is wonderfully soft and versatile, yet strong and durable for many lifetimes over. With an epidermal protective layer up to three times thicker than cowhide and the maximum amount as an inch. Buffalo leather provides the best strength and flexibility. Available in a wide range of colours and finishes ranging from smooth, lightly pebbled tans to distressed earth tones, as well as exotic heavily grained hides.
Our leather is tanned “naked”, which means that it’s quite natural and contains a great feel to your hand. The tanning process we use purposefully does not include stain-resistance or waterproofing because these additives destroy the “hand” of natural leather, making it stiffer and leaving it feeling plasticized.
